The Golden Retriever was developed in the early 19th century as the ideal hunting companion, capable of retrieving birds both on land and in water in the marshy Scottish countryside. Due to their friendliness and intelligence, they are a popular family pet and an excellent working dog for roles such as service dog, therapy dog, or search and rescue. American and Canadian Goldens are generally leaner and darker than their British counterparts. Their wavy feathery coat is water-resistant, their undercoat helps them regulate their body temperature, and both coats are prone to heavy seasonal shedding. In 2013, on the 100th anniversary of the British Golden Retriever Club, Goldens from all over the world made a pilgrimage to the breed’s birthplace in Scotland, where 222 of them posed for a single record-breaking photograph.

Physical characteristics

Golden retrievers have beautiful golden fur, which is how they earned the first part of their name. According to the AKC, the golden retriever’s broad head with friendly, intelligent eyes, short ears, and straight muzzle is characteristic of the breed.

Activity

It is recommended that your Golden Retrievers get plenty of exercise. If they do not exercise regularly, they may develop undesirable behaviors and become overweight. These dogs are excellent companions for hiking and biking. Golden Retrievers enjoy being active with their favorite people. Due to their strong pulling instinct, your puppy may need to be on a leash during exercise outside of a fenced yard to avoid disturbances. Running with your dog is a great way to help them get the exercise they need.

Care

According to the ASPCA, golden retrievers need a fair amount of grooming to maintain their thick, shiny coat. Daily brushing will help prevent knots and tangles and reduce the amount of hair that accumulates around your home. Your puppy’s nails will need to be trimmed regularly if they do not wear down naturally through play and outdoor activity.

Health and aging

Your best friend can still live a full and happy life with proper care and activity. According to Animal Planet, golden retrievers have a lifespan of about 10-15 years and are considered senior dogs at 8 years old.

The personality of the Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are playful but gentle with children and usually get along well with other pets and strangers. These dogs love to please, which probably explains why they respond so well to obedience training and are such popular working dogs.
